Inspiration
Do you prefer the lake, mountains, or countryside?
Experiencing an exciting summer in and around Lake Annecy is definitely within everyone’s reach.
Whether more active or laid-back (or both), whatever version you prefer simply requires a sense of wonder. For a wealth of amazing experiences, the area holds all the cards for you to enjoy the most exciting summer ever. Here are a few gems we uncovered…
Escapades in 3 stages
Stage 1: By the Lake
Water from up high
Summertime rhymes with swimming, even more so when the heat becomes overwhelming. Yet, to take full advantage of the lake’s refreshing waters, safety remains a top priority. Knowing how to swim is an obvious prerequisite, as is understanding the environment where you plan to venture. A lake, like the mountains, is a natural (and often wild) environment with its own unique characteristics and dangers. Being well aware of them makes it easier to prepare for and handle any hazards or unexpected events.
This is exactly what Pool Nat teaches in the swimming lessons it offers in the lake at the municipal beach in Menthon-Saint-Bernard.

Whether taking a private lesson or a longer, more intensive course, the team’s three state-certified swim instructors – Arnaud, Maxime, and Dorian – teach their students the fundamentals required to embark on a safe open-water swimming experience. Children’s courses are taught Monday through Friday, and adult courses on Saturday and Sunday, all in small groups. What a great way to quickly improve and become more at ease and confident in the water. While no inflatable armbands are used, kids learn with the help of other types of teaching tools, first in the small swimming area and then in the large area, both in the lake. Kids quickly learn to swim in a natural environment, as well as to manage their fear of deep water and their surroundings.
This also offers the opportunity to learn, right from the start, the safety fundamentals when swimming in a lake: never dive without knowing how deep the water is or without first entering the water; always stay within the designated lifeguarded swimming areas unless you have the proper equipment; and avoid swimming in the middle of the lake in areas where boats of all sizes frequently navigate. Also note that inner tubes, air mattresses, and other floating objects are not allowed on Lake Annecy outside the designated areas, which are marked by yellow buoys at a specified distance from the shore. These are just a few key guidelines to keep in mind for when swimming in the upper and lower lake.
Note as well that areas such as marinas or designated water sports zones, reed beds, and the Bout du Lac Nature Reserve are protected areas, where swimming is prohibited to preserve the natural balance aquatic flora and fauna need to thrive around the lake.

Stage 2: In the Mountains
Cycling time
Another must-do during summer in the mountains is cycling. Once again, for a safe and sound adventure, best be prepared. First on the agenda: obtain the right maps and route information to better understand the topography of the ride, distances, and vertical gain. Depending your group, this information will go a long way towards avoiding any disappointment. The online guidebook published by Annecy Mountains provides all the information needed for both adults and children to enjoy road cycling and mountain biking in the area. Whether you prefer to hop on a road bike, gravel bike, or mountain bike, the Annecy Mountains website has catalogued every possible ride, describes each in detail, and offers several ways to view them, in either PDF or GPX format.
This wealth of information makes it easy to plan your ride, whether you are heading up, over, or through the area on whatever type of bike you choose.

Stage 3: Through the Countryside
Stopping to smell the flowers
Venturing off the beaten path is always an enjoyable experience, especially when wandering far away from the hustle and bustle. One particular place well worth the detour is Jardins Secrets (Secret Gardens).
Located in Vaulx, just 20km from Annecy as you drive towards Rumilly, this truly is a hidden gem. The flowers, plants, and trees in this magical places bloom with the seasons. A festival of colors, a burst of fragrances, and the marvels of the plant world found their own slice of paradise, unveiling their splendor, invigorating the senses; flowers in their purest state.

For more than 40 years, in this hybrid world linking the area’s alpine valleys to the Mediterranean basin, this garden-maze has offered a sense of wonder around every corner. It all began when family circumstances led a determined couple and their three daughters to create such an unusual place. They started by renovating their old farm, and then, stone after stone, planted flowers and trees, built new structures, and beautified this lively home and place to visit that seem right out of a dream.
The architecture has multiple influences – Andalusian, Indian, Savoyard, Tunisian – and a series of gardens, small patios, outdoor lounges, galleries, fountains, and basins housing a variety of thriving plants and flowers. From the Andalusian garden to the rose bushes, from the palmette to the lyre galleries, these different worlds intertwine and open the door to everyone’s imagination.
Visitors have several opportunities for encounters and sharing the experience at Jardins Secrets in their own way: enjoying a picnic or a game with kids, reading a book or savoring a snack while relaxing on a terrace. This place is truly magical at heart.
