Feminine inspiration all the way to the top

Inspire, you are on camera, or rather, “on camera, you are so inspiring!”

The Femmes en Montagne (Women in the Mountains) film festival gives women who love adventuring in the mountains the chance to show their skills on film.

Whatever the style or objective, each forms a link in a chain of inspiring women currently pushing the edge of the envelope, forging their own path, and finding a place of their own in the most beautiful setting imaginable, the mountains.

A mountain of obstacles

Tanya Naville created the non-profit organization Femmes en Montagne to encourage and provide a platform for female athletes as well as to promote diversity within the community of mountain enthusiasts. The non-profit grew enough to launch a film festival whose fifth edition will take place from November 14-17, 2024, with thirty-four films from all over the world entered into the competition. The four days include screenings, discussions and debates, as well as workshops to highlight the unique initiatives and impressive backgrounds of the women featured in each film.

A slice of their lives as portraits, the mountains as their laboratory, we follow in the footsteps of women who hold the mountains in their hearts, seeking rejuvenation there in so many different ways. Whether in front of or behind the lens, they tell their stories: starting over after battling a disease, finding the right work-life balance, reconciling family life with a passion for mountain sports, coming back after a period of mourning, as well as pushing one’s physical limits. Each story focuses on a challenge to overcome, starting at the foot of the mountains with the climax and resolution on some form of summit.

The festival proved an amazing success from the very start.

“For the past three years, the festival has posted a full house at every screening and has successfully won over fans who put their trust us, often purchasing passes even before we announce what movies we plan to show.” While you always have the option of trying to push your way through, we recommend reserving your seats as quickly as possible.

For those unable to attend in person, a €25 pass offers the chance to view almost all of the films on an online platform, with access from November 14, 2024, through January 6, 2025. Enjoy 28 films, all with subtitles to make viewing as easy as possible.

Uncovering the hidden gems to show during the festival’s fifth edition required 85 hours of screening to watch the 135 films submitted. While it is up to the jury to choose those films that will win such awards as the most inspiring woman, the film with the most eco-friendly approach, the best short film, or the Grand Prix for the best film overall, a few choice films have already caught our eye.

Nature always finds a way,” tells the story of five North American women who embark on the iconic 170 km Tour du Mont Blanc, tackling the physical challenge of the seven-day trek while demonstrating the power of friendship on the path to overcoming their own personal demons together. “Andrea,” tells the story of Nina Caprez, one of climbing’s genuine rock stars, filmed by director and Annecy local, Maxime Moulin. “Advice for girls,” depicts the collective experience of women in skiing, showcasing female skiers of all ages, creed, race, and sexual orientation looking to find their rightful place in the ski industry regardless of their differences. And “Dream Again” throws viewers into the vertigo-inducing world of Adriana Brownlee, who at just 23 years old became the youngest woman to have climbed all 14 of the world’s 8000-meter summits, as she climbs summits number eleven and twelve.

Stories with a unique feminine perspective

For four days, the screenings are followed by poignant testimonials and a variety of workshops that offer hands on experience.

Filmmaking, learning all about a given sport, and even creative workshops, if movies can be considered a vector for sharing and emotion, the festival serves to strengthen the bond. Whether you prefer a climbing session or a workshop to learn key knots to use in the mountains, whether you want to learn how to make mountain films or discuss the topic of female directors, all of these opportunities for discussion offer the chance for new stories to emerge. The workshops provide the chance to speak freely and spark support for inclusion and increasing women’s participation in outdoor sports, which opens so many doors and possibilities for accomplishment.

Festival director Tanya Naville explains, “This alternative way of seeing things provides us with the opportunity to promote a genuine way of life as well as a different take on society in a broader sense.”

Reflecting on society as a whole, above and beyond the movies themselves, we see more and more women participating in mountain sports, gaining international fame in such disciplines as rock climbing and snow sports, while still underrepresented in other areas. For example, only 2% to 3% of all mountain guides are women. Broader participation, accessibility, and inclusion are three key issues for the future of mountain sports.

In this respect, the Femmes en Montagne (Women in the Mountains) film festival is 100% accessible. The online viewing platform provides unlimited access to the festival’s content for one month. The festival also makes in-person showings and workshops much more accessible by providing French sign language interpreters for the hearing impaired.

Through this inspiring cultural experience, enjoy a breath of fresh air with a uniquely feminine perspective.
