The Heritage House is a traditional Grand-Bornand chalet, built in 1830, which has been renovated and furnished to make a museum.
It is a listed museum since 2007.

People of today are able to discover the traditional way of life of the area as well as the ingenious, wooden chalet architecture, very specific to this region of Bornes-Aravis.

According to the Sardinian land registry map of 1728, we know that there was a house on this site and also who the successive owners were. The house was rebuilt in 1830, as the date carved on the main supporting beam (the « pointe d'âne ») confirms. However, older pieces of wood were also used in the construction, like the beam found recently which dates from1597.

The chalet was home to both the family and the farm animals. People lived a peasant lifestyle, based on the traditional mountain economy of agricultural, pastoral and forestry activities, more specifically cereal crops, dairy herds and woodcutting.
This chalet would have been used during the low season, from the autumn to the spring, but also occasionally during summer hay-making. Both the family and their herds used to go up to the “alpages” pastures and live during the summer in a second home higher up.

The architecture is typical of this valley ; a basic framework of wooden beams with a mainbeam on which rests a two-sided, sloping roof covered with wooden shingles or tiles (called « ancelles »). The slope of the terrain is the determining factor for the orientation of the chalet and the main entrance was always placed beside the path that led up to it.

Because the chalet is built into the slope, half of the groundfloor level is underground. This level consists of cellars and a stable for the horse. On the floor above it there is the living area for the family and then two sheds, one for the cowshed and the other to house the smaller animals. The top floor is the barn, which occupies the whole surface area of the chalet. Hay is stored here for winter fodder.

Next to the chalet there is always a little shed or granary. It is used to store grain, seed corn and all valuables belonging to the family.
