950 years of history ooze from the keeps, the guardrooms, the kitchen and the richly furnished rooms which are decorated with artworks. This castle holds many memories, as it was the residence of St Francis of Sales and a favourite getaway for the Prime Minister of Piedmont-Sardinia, Camille de Cavour.
Built on the site of an ancient fort dating from 1060, the castle has been inhabited since 1602 by the De Sales family. St Francis of Sales lived here, and Camille de Cavour, who united Italy, stayed in the castle regularly. Various items of artwork belonging to these two illustrious characters and their families can still be seen here.
The tour covers 950 years of history, through the keeps and guardhouses, the kitchen with its massive fireplaces (1632), and the richly furnished rooms decorated with works of art. In this castle you can almost feel the presence of the marquis of Sales who were important figures of the Court of Savoie in Turin.
